Frequently asked questions
Aren’t All ARts Expressive?
Not necessarily. Art can be made and used in a variety of ways. For example, artwork could be designed for advertising, conveying a message, portraying a subject realistically, expressing an idea, eliciting emotions, and more. Expressive Arts experiences are focused on the process rather than the product. The aim is to encourage a space for exploring, discovery, connection, growth, and healing.
What are Social emotional arts?
The Certificate Program in Social Emotional Arts (SEA) empowers educators, community arts professionals, mental health practitioners, and others interested in maximizing social-emotional benefits of arts experiences, which includes minimizing self-judgment and anxiety that can impede learning. Learn more at the Arts & Healing Initiative.
are you an art therapist?
I am not certified as an Art Therapist and my courses are not classified as therapy. However, the content I offer is designed to have therapeutic benefits and is based on research and methodologies used by the top professionals in this field. The artistic process may elicit an emotional response and participants are encouraged to use this to inform themselves and their mental health care team. Resources will be provided as needed for additional support.
Do I need to be a good artist to participate?
Absolutely no experience required! If you do have training you may even be asked to disregard everything you have learned and participate with a beginner’s mind. My courses will offer opportunities to explore different art modalities and play with the media without worrying about technique.
Do you offer discounts or financial aid?
Yes! It is important for these programs to be accessible for all. Please contact me if you are interested in attending and could use a little assistance. I am grateful for the teachers and healers who have done this for me and I am prepared to pay it forward.
Do I have to be in boise to attend?
I will be offering courses virtually to accommodate those who are out of the area as well as anyone who cannot attend in-person for health and safety reasons. Watch for links when registering or contact me to set up a private session.
